Uh-oh! Feeling the telltale signs of a UTI creeping up? Don’t let it ruin your day! I’ve got an arsenal of 26 foods and herbs that can help nip that pesky infection in the bud. So, as soon as you feel a UTI coming on, consume as many of these foods and herbs as possible, and don’t forget to check out the avoid list that can make or break your results.
1. Cherries: Look for dark ones. If the red cherries you’re looking at are colored too lightly, it means the soil of the cherry tree didn’t have the optimal level of minerals.
2. Cranberries: Frozen cranberries can be a great way to get your hands on this fruit. Try incorporating them into your smoothies. If you’re not making your own cranberry juice, look for juice that’s made 100 percent from cranberries with no added sugars, preservatives, or other additives.
3. Figs: Add a celery stick, which is rich in mineral salts, with each fig you eat. It is a perfect nutritional combination.
4. Lemons and limes: Try drinking two 500 mL glasses of water with half a lemon or lime squeezed into each just after waking up and give your body half an hour to clean up before eating breakfast.
5. Mangoes: For noticeable results, eat 2 mangoes a day.
6. Melons: With melons, the body’s detoxification processes become amplified, helping to drive toxins from deep within the organs. To reap the benefits, try eating half a small melon per day.
7. Oranges and tangerines: Squeeze fresh orange and add water for a refreshing, hydrating beverage that will support your UTI. Drink as much as you want throughout the day.
8. Papaya: Papaya is an ideal fruit if you are dealing with any virus or unfriendly bacteria.
9. Celery: Celery may seem like a bland, boring food, but it is anything but. Celery is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods. It helps starve unproductive bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, and viruses that present in the body and flushes their toxins out of the intestinal tract and liver. My favorite way of using celery is by juicing it. Aim for 500 to 1 L of celery juice a day on an empty stomach to really support a UTI. If you don’t have a juicer, start snacking on it.
10. Cruciferous vegetables: Start a daily rotation with different varieties: red cabbage, kale, collard greens, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green cabbage.
11. Onions: Onions are one of the most accomplished foods on the planet for tamping down bacterial overgrowth in the body, making them a star for anyone who deals with UTIs.
12. Sweet potatoes: To reap sweet potatoes’ maximum benefits, try to eat one per day. A great lunch idea is a nice large spinach salad served with a baked sweet potato and some fresh guacamole on the side. Yum!
13. Cilantro: Often cilantro is used as just a garnish, but if you want results, it’s best to incorporate it into your meals multiple times a day. You can juice it with fresh vegetables, put a handful in a smoothie, add it to a chopped salad, soup, salsa, or guacamole.
14. Garlic: Although roasting or cooking garlic is delicious and valuable, garlic is most effective when consumed raw. Try mixing raw garlic into your favorite dips, salad dressings, or even try eating one clove with your dinner, chewing it with whatever you are eating.
15. Parsley: Parsley is an all-purpose pathogen fighter. Try making tabbouleh, juicing it with other vegetables such as cucumber and/or celery. You can also make a tea with fresh parsley and think about sprinkling it on all your meals.
16. Aloe Vera: Large aloe leaves are available from many grocery stores. Cut off a 2-inch section, fillet it, removing the green skin, and scooping out the clear, jelly flesh. You can then eat the flesh as is, blend it with water, or add it to smoothies.
17. Coconut Water: Look for pure, unpasteurized, clear, or slightly tinged with pink coconut water. One of my favorite brands is Taste Nirvana.
1. Cat’s Claw: Pharmaceutical antibiotics have their place and purpose, but Cat’s Claw is unique. Pathogens such as bacteria cannot become resistant to it, unlike antibiotics.
2. Lemon Balm Tea: It is antiviral and antibacterial, and helps reduce bladder inflammation, making it effective in alleviating urinary tract infections.
3. Licorice Root: You can use it as a herbal tea or in its alcohol-free tincture form.
4. Raspberry Leaf Tea: This herb is supportive to women in all phases of their life and is worth having in your herbal cabinet.
5. Dandelion: Specifically helpful for the bladder and uterus, all parts of the dandelion can support you during a UTI. You can eat or juice the leaves and make a tea out of the flowers and roots. It is the ultimate supportive plant.
6. Nettle Leaf Tea: It is anti-inflammatory for tired organs and contains healing alkaloids. Nettle is also a potent pain reliever.
7. Rose Hips Tea: Amazing for alleviating UTIs and even more powerful than cranberries!
These foods can make it challenging for the body to get rid of the UTI. It’s best to avoid them until you feel better.
